William C. Clayton Letter - PROFILE
After attempting to decipher the letter, I tried to list the things that I know about William C Clayton AND the things I can guess about him - a profile!
  • My "profile" of William C Clayton

My theories are:

·         Marriage date: William C Clayton was married about 1846. [These assumptions are based on the fact that in 1856, the date of the letter, he has three daughters, two are in school. I thus guess that he has been married about 10 years, thus a marriage year of 1846.]

·         Birth year: Based on a guess at the marriage year of 1846, I then guess that he was 20 years old when he married, thus a birth year of 1826. [Sort of a wild guess, but at least it provides a starting point.]

·         Move to Kentucky: My guess is that William C Clayton moved to Kentucky after he married, so about 1850 + or – a few years.

·         His father: Again based on just guesses, I would target William C Clayton’s fathers birth date about 20+ years before his own or about 1805. [This guess probably assumes that William C Clayton was the first child.]

·         Which County? Since the letter mentions the Henderson tavern and since many of the Tapps first moved to Henderson County, Kentucky, my guess is that William C Clayton is living in Henderson County, Kentucky in 1856.

·        Connection to the Tapps: Clearly William C Clayton has a close connection with the Tapp family. My guess is that his mother was a Tapp. The Tapp family is documented in Person County Heritage, Volume 2, Article 543. A list of William Tapp’s children appears at both:

Most of the names mentioned in the letter are children of William Tapp’s son, Lewis Tapp. Information about this family appears at:

·        Were does William C Clayton connect? Based on the “Uncles and Aunts” that he mentions in the letter, the answer would seem to be that William C Clayton’s mother was one of Lewis Tapps children. But – I have found no reference to one of Lewis’ daughters marrying a Clayton. Send me your guess!
